In 1785, a George Benefiel owned land in Fayette Co., Pa. and a number of Benefiels appear in the frontier rangers in the Revolutionary War records in the area. George served in Culbertson's Pennsylvania militia, a unit that served from Cumberland Co..

The Benefiels moved to Kentucky where George appears 1795 in the Scott Co. tax list, 1796 and 1797 in Bourbon County, but does not appear in further tax lists there.

He appears in the tax list for Montgomery County, Kentucky in 1799, 1801 and 1802.

George Eli Benefiel was listed in the 1810 Census for Clark County, Kentucky under the name George Bennifield with 3 white males under 10, 2 10-16, 2 16-26, 2 over 45, 1 white female under 10, 2 10-16, 2 16-26, and 1 over 45.

He moved to Jefferson County, Indiana in 1814. When Benefiel moved to Indiana, he was joining his wife's four Buchanan brothers, who had settled along the Ripley Co.-Jefferson Co. border by 1809. George owned land in Section 3 Twp. 5N Range 11E in Shelby Township.. His will is recorded in Jefferson Co.

George was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census in Jefferson County, Indiana, with 2 white males under 10, 2 10-15, 1 16-18, 2 19-25, 1 over 44, 1 white female under 10, 1 10-15, 2 16-25, and 1 over 44. Four persons were engaged in agriculture.

George's first wife was Esther Campbell. They married in about 1763. George and Esther had three children: Mary, William, and Margaret.

Esther died about 1773.

Left Ireland and came to York Co., Pennsylvania, arriving in about 1774.

George married again after he was in Pennsylvania. The name of his second wife is not known. George and his second wife had four children: Wilson, John, Martha (m. McLaughlin), and David.

After the Revolutionary War, in about 1790, George moved to Kentucky. He was in Woodford County, Kentucky in 1792, 1793, 1794, and 1795.

He was in Jefferson County, Indiana, by 1813. Here the family built a fort called Buchanan's station, as a defense against the Indians. A smaller replica of the original blockhouse, was rected on the same site and was dedicated on August 26, 1927 by the Indiana daughters of the American revolution.

George Buchanan is considered an established Patriot by the Daughters of the American Revolution. His Patriot number is A-016392. His service is noted as having paid the supply tax in 1779, and having served in the 4th Pennsylvania Regiment.
