Elizabeth Lucas married the much older Henry Briggs.

Charles Lucas married Mary, daughter of Benjamin Evans of Prince George County, VA. In her last will Mary Evans Lucas leaves property to her two sons William and John. This John Lucas was Captain of the Revolutionary War and is said to have been with George Washington's troops at the surrender of Cornwallis. He married Mary Ropeta; their son Major John Lucas b. Notes:

Grace Beckwith is underage and unmarried in 1675, and married to William Lucas with a child named Elizabeth Lucas in 1687. Other children are documented as William, Charles, Hannah, Ann, Mary and Grace.

William Lucas lived in that part of Surry County which was very close to Charles City (later Prince George), and died there in 1717. He married Grace Beckwith, daughter of Marmaduke and Maudlin (Creed) Beckwith of Surry Co. She died 1720. The will of William Lucas was dated Oct. 1, 1716 and probated December 18, 1717 (D. & W. 1715-30, p. 79), that of Grace Lucas was dated December 22, 1719 and probated February 17, 1719/20 (Id., p. 249). Her will is in Book 7, page 249.

    Children:
    1. 1. William Lucas was born in 1688 in Brunswick County, VA; died in 1739 in Brunswick County, VA.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  William Lucas was born in 1629 in England; was christened on 21 Mar 1629 in Cornwall, England (son of William W. Lucas); died in 1659 in Virginia, USA.

    Notes:

"He appears briefly in the records with his wife, Anne (b. 1630) in testimony in a law-suit June 3, and 11, 1659. (Surry D. & W., 1645-71, pp. 133-4). William and Ann Lucas had only one son, William Lucas, who was born in 1654 (D. & . 1671-84, p. 183). William Lucas Sr. probably died soon after 1659, and there is some reason to think that his widow, Anne, may have married 2nd Robert Dennis of Surry."

Sources: Southside Virginia Families, Vol. II, by John bennett Boddie, p. 308-309; Virginia Wills and Administrations 1632-1800 compiled by Clayton Torrence; Early Wills 1765-1799 Mecklenburg County Virginia compiled by Katherin B. Elliott; Wills and Administrations of Surry County Virginia 1671-1750 by Eliza Timberlake Davis; Revolutionary War Records Mecklenburg County Virginia compiled by Katherine B. Elliott.

Son William, a daughter married Abraham Evans, a daughter married John Harris.

William married Anna Scarborough. Anna was born in 1630 in Lancashire, England; was christened on 23 Feb 1630 in St Bartholomews, Colne, Lancashire, England; died in 1686 in Surry County, Virginia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Anna Scarborough was born in 1630 in Lancashire, England; was christened on 23 Feb 1630 in St Bartholomews, Colne, Lancashire, England; died in 1686 in Surry County, Virginia.

    Notes:

Anne remarried to Robert Dennis died between 1670 and 1671, and his widow, Anne Dennis, on March 1, 1671/72 deeded 50 acres of land out of a large tract she had bought from John LeGrande to her son-in-law, Abraham Evans, having previously sold half of the total tract to William Lucas (D. & W., 1671-84, p.264). William Lucas was witness to the deed from LeGrande to Anne Dennis (Id., p.13) and on Nov. 1, 1688, was deeded more of the land by Nathaniel Dennis, son and heir of Robert and Anne Dennis (D. & W. 1687-94, p.92). William Dennis appears in William Lucas's household in the tithables of 1687, and Nathaniel Dennis is shown with Lucas in 1690. Ann Dennis also deeded land to her son-in-law, John Harris, about the same time that she made the deed to Abraham Evans (D.&W. 1671-84, p.87). If the identification of Anne Dennis and Anne Lucas is correct, William and Anne Lucas probably had two daughters in addition to William Lucas, Jr., one of whom married Abraham Evans and the other, John Harris."

Christening records of St Bartholomews, Colne, Lancashire shows Anna, daughter of Johis (John) Scarborough christened Feb 23, 1630. There is quite a distance (4 1/2 hours by train today) between Cornwall where William Lucas was born and Lancashire, so it is uncertain if this is "his" Anne.

    Children:
    1. 2. William Lucas was born in 1654; died in Dec 1717 in Surry, Surry, Virginia.

  3. 6.  Marmaduke Beckwith was born in 1619 in Featherstone Castle, Clint, Yorkshire, England; died on 7 Oct 1667 in Surry, Surry, Virginia.

Marmaduke married Maudlin Creed. Maudlin (daughter of Raphael "Ralph" Creed and Margaret Baker) was born in 1629 in Westbury upon Trim, Gloucester, England; died in in Surry County, Virginia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 7.  Maudlin Creed was born in 1629 in Westbury upon Trim, Gloucester, England (daughter of Raphael "Ralph" Creed and Margaret Baker); died in in Surry County, Virginia.

    Notes:

    Surry Co., Virginia:
Deed Book 2, pg 88 dated 7/7/1675 has 2 deeds of gift from Grace Creed Warren, widow of Ralph Creed, and Elizabeth Hogwood d/o Ralph and Grace Creed to Maudlin Creed Beckwith's two "orphan" daughters Grace and Elizabeth Beckwith. Both are stated as underage and unmarried.

Marmaduke Beckwith (d> 1670) married Maudlin Creed, d/o Raphael and Grace Creed and had issue Elizabeth, John and Grace. Maudlin remarried Edward Oliver, he died 1676 and she then married John Warren.

Two deeds of gift 7/7/1675 DB2, pg 88 show (1.) Grace Creed Warren (Raphael's widow remarried to Edward Warren) a gift to her granddaughter and godchild Grace Beckwith of a heifer. Male increase (calves) to go to Ed Oliver (her step-father.) She is then described as an orphan, underage and unmarried. (2.) is consecutive on the same page and is an identically worded gift from Elizabeth Creed Hogwood to her neice and godchild Elizabeth Beckwith, also an orphan, underage and unmarried. In both deeds, if either girl die before marriage or of age then the gift goes to the other sister.

3/6/1687, DB 4, pg 38 in Surry shows a gift from Elizabeth Beckwith, deceased, to goddaughter Elizabeth Lucas as carried out posthumously by William Lucas. This William is husband of Grace Beckwith.
So... Grace Beckwith is underage and unmarried in 1675, and married to William Lucas with a child named Elizabeth Lucas in 1687. Other children are documented as William, Charles, Hannah, Ann and Grace.

    Children:
    1. Elizabeth Beckwith was born before 1667 in Surry, Surry, Virginia; died in in Surry, Surry, Virginia.
    2. 3. Grace Beckwith was born before 1667 in Surry, Surry, Virginia; died in 1720 in Surry, Surry, Virginia.
    3. John Beckwith was born before 1667 in Surry, Surry, Virginia; died in in Surry, Surry, Virginia.

    Notes:

Arrived in Virginia 1625 and again 1628.

The records mention William Lucas, born in Salt Ashe, County Cornwall, England, as owner of the merchant ship Supply, which sailed to Virginia in 1625/26.

This William is believed to be a relative of Roger and Robert Lucas who came to VA in 1636. Roger settled in Charles City Co, VA, his son William was bapt in that county 16 May 1660.

    Children:
    1. 4. William Lucas was born in 1629 in England; was christened on 21 Mar 1629 in Cornwall, England; died in 1659 in Virginia, USA.

  2. 14.  Raphael "Ralph" Creed was born in 1605 in Shirehampton, Gloucestershire, England; was christened on 1 Aug 1605 in Westbury upon Trim, Gloucester, England (son of Edward Creed); died before 2 Sep 1668 in Southwark parish, Surry County, VA.

    Other Events:

    • Name: Raiph
    • Name: Raphael

    Notes:

Ralph, Raiph or Raphael Creed was an early settler of Surry County, Virginia. He is first mentioned in 1655 as a ship's carpenter of the "York" (Lower Norfolk County Aniquary, VI, 82). His first appearance in the records of Surry County was on May 3, 1658, when Joseph Whitmell mortageged his crop to him (Surry County record, Wills & Deed 1645-71, p. 117). On May 30, 1659 he deeded to Thomas Chivers 1,1oo odd acres of land, lately in the posession of Richard Hill, which had been sold to Creed by Col. George Jordan (id., p. 151). As Raiph Creed, carpenter, he was deeded 150 acres by Thomas Flood August 27, 1661 (id., p. 172), and at his death, this prperty passed to his son, William Creed, who dying without issue, it descended to a daguhter, Mary Creed, "according to the will of her father, Raphael Creed", and was sold by Mary and her husband, David Andrews, Jr., to William Edwards, January 6, 1690/91 (Surry County records, Willds and Deeds 1687-94, p. 195).
Thomas Wall made a mortage of his property to Ralph Creed February 7, 1663/64, died soon afterwards, and his son, Thomas Wall Jr., bound himself apprentice to Ralph Creed, carpenter, September 6, 1664 (Surry County records, Willds and Deeds 1645-71, p. 230 and 244). Ralph Creed is shown as a resident of Southwark Parish, Surry County, with two tithables in his family, on June 10, 1668 (id., p. 316), and died between that time and September 2, 1668, when there is s record of a list of "Debts demanded form the estate of Raphaell Creed" (id. p. 311). A sale of goods from the estate made by the widow Creed, October 15, 1668, records sales amounting to 7,781 lbs. of tobacco and indcludes among other items "the printed Laws of Virginia & a good Sermon book and "i salmebook" (id., p. 317). The widow Grace Creed, married second, Edward Warren, who had previously been married to Mrs. Aycle (Croxon) CarterParke, widow successively of William Carter and Capt. Giles Parke. Mrs Grace Creed Warren died probably early in 1676, as her son-in-law Francis Hogwood, acknowledged receipt of the estat of Mary Creed from Edward Warren March 29, 1676 (Surry County records, Wills and Deeds 1671-84, p. 115). Edward Warren's will, dated April 15, 1676, and probated May 2, 1676, states that hw wishes to be buried "by my loing wife Grace Creede," and leaves his property to his son-in-law (step-son), William Creed and his four daughters-in-law (step-daughters), mentioning by name Johney (Joane?) and Mary Creede (id., p. 114). The five children of Raphael and Grace Creed were; 1) Elizabeth Creed, who married Francis Hogwood and had issue, Richard, William, George and Frances Hogwood; 2) Maudlin Creed who married first, Marmaduke Beckwith (d. 1670), second, Edward Oliver (1649-1676), and third 1676, John Warren, and had at least two Beckwith daugherts, Elizabeth and Grace; 3) Johney (Joane?) Creed married probably Noah Barefoot; 4) Mary Creed married first 1678, John Flood; second 1679, David Andrews Jr.; and 5) William Creed, d.s.p. 1688, leaving his property to David Andrews and Noah Barefoot.
It appears highly probable that the Raphael Creed (named as a son in the will of Edward Creed, of Shirehampton, Gloucester, and as a grandson in the will of Rapael Creed, of the parish of Westbury, upon Trim, Gloucester) is identical with Ralph or Raphael Creed of Surry County. Joan Creed, mentioned in the wills as wife of Peter Redman, may offer the clue to the English origin of another early Virginia settler, namely John Redman of Westmoreland County (1623-73), whose first son was named Peter.

Raphael married Margaret Baker on 4 Feb 1632 in Henbury, Gloucester, England. Margaret was born in 1615 in Shirehampton, Gloucestershire, England; died before 29 Mar 1676 in Surry, Surry, Virginia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  3. 15.  Margaret Baker was born in 1615 in Shirehampton, Gloucestershire, England; died before 29 Mar 1676 in Surry, Surry, Virginia.

    Notes:

The widow Grace Creed, married second, Edward Warren.

Two deeds (Surry Co., VA) of gift 7/7/1675 DB2, pg 88 show (1.) Grace Creed Warren (Raphael's widow remarried to Edward Warren)a gift to her granddaughter and godchild Grace Beckwith of a heifer. Male increase (calves) to go to Ed Oliver (her step-father.) She is then described as an orphan, underage and unmarried. (2.) is consecutive on the same page and is an identically worded gift from Elizabeth Creed Hogwood to her niece and godchild Elizabeth Beckwith, also an orphan, underage and unmarried. In both deeds, if either girl die before marriage or of age then the gift goes to the other sister.

Some sources have Margaret with last name Grace, some have first name Grace "the widow Grace Creed". Facts:
There were two wives, as Raphaell Creed married first Margret Baker Feb 4, 1632 in Henbury, Gloucester. They had John, Joane, Thomas and Mary.
The book Jamestown, Southern Virginia Counties, Northampton County, North Carolina, Then Westward has widower Francis Hogwood married second Grace Flood. She may have been the mother of Elizabeth, Maudlin and William.
