    • Made several trips to England during his life. He was a tobacco planter and made business trips. Francis was bonded out as an apprentice for his passage to America and was a "Freeman" by 1649/50, becoming eligible for a "land patent."

      Arrived in Charles City Virgina by 1650, sponsors were Richard Tye and Charles Sparrowe. Reference: Early Virginia Immigrants; 1623-1666 H

      Lived in Martin Brands Plantation, Charles City County, Virginia, and Surry County, Virginia.

      Francis Hogwood's last will dated 3 January 1676, recorded in Surry Co, VA Record Book 1671-84, p122. "In the Name of God Amen. I Francis Hogwood of Surry County being very sick but praised be God in pfect Sence & Minde, Doe make this my last Will & Testamt: first I recoment my Soule to God that gave it, trusting in the meritts of Jesus Christ for my salvation, & I dispose of my worldly Estate as followeth first I doe Will and Ord: that all my Cattle bedding & my Mare & my pewter be equally divided amongst my fower Children Richard William George & my Daughter Frances, & yt all the rest of my goods & my hoggs shall be apprazzed & Equally divided ... only ... that Richard having a Gun already William & George have the other two. Secondly I give unto my sd Daughter my two Gold Rings & one bodkin and the other bodkin to my Sister Mary Creed. And I desire my Good ffriend Lt Coll Jordan to take my son George into his care, & into ye Care of his Godmother Mary Rome to see him kindly used & brought up & what he hath pserved for him ... And I doe make my son Richard my soll Executor to see this my Will pformed & doe desire the said Jordan, Mr Ben Harrison & Major Browne to assist him in the dividing .. desireing that William Hogwood may dispose of himself to some good Trade ... I doe also leave my said Executor: to possess my house ... so long as my right shall continue .. & that he doe see me decently Interred by my wife, whereunto I have sett my hand this third day of Janry 1676. I desire that my Son George may have what right the law will give him in ye Mare now in dispute & to have his owne Chest." Witnessed by George Jordan and Thomas Fflood.

      Will probated 8 May 1677 in Surry County, Virginia.

      Some say his father was George Awood, but his son Francis was christened Mar 21, 1623 in Kings Stanley, Gloucester, and died May 2, 1628.

      Francis appears as Hawgood : "On 30 JUL 1670 Fra. Hawgood was listed in a second patent as a headright in a patent to William Pebles for 473 acres on the South side of the James River in Charles City County, included with nine other persons ref: Cavaliers and Pioneers Vol. II, p. 74 by Nugent"
