KILL DEVIL HILLS- Burwell O. "Buck" Buchanan, 93, of Kill Devil Hills passed away peacefully in his residence on April 15, 2012. Loving husband of the late Marie Kummer Buchanan [4 May 1920 - 8 Dec 2003]; brother of the late Richard and Audrey (Powers), father of Judy (Jim Parker) of Philadelphia, PA and Richard (Viviane) of Fairview Park, OH and proud grandfather of Andrew, Lucy, Taryn and Catherine.
Born in Norfolk, VA, the family moved to Brooklyn, NY when Buck was 12. He served in the Army Air Corps in WWII as a C-47 pilot in the 79th Troop Carrier Squadron of the 436th Troop Carrier Group and also participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy. After the war he settled in Cleveland, OH and spent several years as a teacher and counselor at Fairview High School. His next career was as an inspector of the U.S. Immigration Service from which he retired in 1983.
He became an accomplished painter of beach scenes, light houses, etc., inspired by the beautiful surrounding of the Outer Banks after he retired.
