9681 Quote from Wayne Glenn, the old record collector:
Sophia was born near the current Berry (Maples) Cemetery on the "Loop" near Hooten Town in 1840 to Francis Patrick Berry (1817-1885) and Nancy Minerva Gideon. This was in then Taney County-----now in Stone County.
Sophia first married James Payne (1829, TN-1882) who had been raised near the current Payne Cemetery, on the James River north of Nixa, by his uncle Archibald Payne. James Payne fought on the Union side in the Civil War.
When Sophia Berry Payne married Thomas Hagewood of the Republic area she of course moved in with him. She had 8 children who were "mostly" grown, although her youngest, John Payne did live with the Hagewoods. Thomas had many mostly grown children as well.
When her husband Thomas Hagewood passed away in 1904, Sophia was not really included in his will------which was only to be expected. BUT she had no home. After living with some of her children she remarried in 1909 in Christian County to a German immigrant by the name of Charles Bader. He was born in Bavaria long before the U. S. Civil War. Sophia was now 69 years young. Mr Bader had come to the Ozarks by 1880 from IL. He was a minister and merchant. The newlyweds lived near Tory Creek------not far from where Sophia and her first husband had taken up housekeeping around 50 years before.
****This third marriage was a quick failure---and the relationship was annulled.
So from 1909 until her death in 1925 Sophia went from one child to another. At one time, her son "Uncle Pad" Payne had a little house across the road from his big farm, where "Grandma Hagewood" lived-----out northwest of Nixa.
But as her health declined Sophia spent more time with her daughters, most notably Easter Payne Graham (1868-1958) of Tory Creek. Easter and her husband John Graham and kids lived where Sophia and James had previously had their farm, on the Stone---Christian County line, southwest of Tory.
In 1925 Sophia passed away and was buried with her first husband James in a little family cemetery that was basically in the "backyard" of the Payne-Graham farm, on the Stone County side of the line.
What do I know about Sophia Jane Berry Payne Hagewood Bader's personality. She was a go getter!! How do you think she survived the trials of the Civil War, while her husband was away at War------and then the loss of that husband when she was only 42 years old. Like most pioneer women she was TOUGH and she had a mind of her own. She was smart and found ways to make it for 43 more years after husband James died. She was a proud lady-----notice all the pictures she is in---when such photographs were not so normal.
Of course, having the blood of the Irish Berrys and Gideons didn't hurt either!

9689 Ralph, Raiph or Raphael Creed was an early settler of Surry County, Virginia. He is first mentioned in 1655 as a ship's carpenter of the "York" (Lower Norfolk County Aniquary, VI, 82). His first appearance in the records of Surry County was on May 3, 1658, when Joseph Whitmell mortageged his crop to him (Surry County record, Wills & Deed 1645-71, p. 117). On May 30, 1659 he deeded to Thomas Chivers 1,1oo odd acres of land, lately in the posession of Richard Hill, which had been sold to Creed by Col. George Jordan (id., p. 151). As Raiph Creed, carpenter, he was deeded 150 acres by Thomas Flood August 27, 1661 (id., p. 172), and at his death, this prperty passed to his son, William Creed, who dying without issue, it descended to a daguhter, Mary Creed, "according to the will of her father, Raphael Creed", and was sold by Mary and her husband, David Andrews, Jr., to William Edwards, January 6, 1690/91 (Surry County records, Willds and Deeds 1687-94, p. 195).
Thomas Wall made a mortage of his property to Ralph Creed February 7, 1663/64, died soon afterwards, and his son, Thomas Wall Jr., bound himself apprentice to Ralph Creed, carpenter, September 6, 1664 (Surry County records, Willds and Deeds 1645-71, p. 230 and 244). Ralph Creed is shown as a resident of Southwark Parish, Surry County, with two tithables in his family, on June 10, 1668 (id., p. 316), and died between that time and September 2, 1668, when there is s record of a list of "Debts demanded form the estate of Raphaell Creed" (id. p. 311). A sale of goods from the estate made by the widow Creed, October 15, 1668, records sales amounting to 7,781 lbs. of tobacco and indcludes among other items "the printed Laws of Virginia & a good Sermon book and "i salmebook" (id., p. 317). The widow Grace Creed, married second, Edward Warren, who had previously been married to Mrs. Aycle (Croxon) CarterParke, widow successively of William Carter and Capt. Giles Parke. Mrs Grace Creed Warren died probably early in 1676, as her son-in-law Francis Hogwood, acknowledged receipt of the estat of Mary Creed from Edward Warren March 29, 1676 (Surry County records, Wills and Deeds 1671-84, p. 115). Edward Warren's will, dated April 15, 1676, and probated May 2, 1676, states that hw wishes to be buried "by my loing wife Grace Creede," and leaves his property to his son-in-law (step-son), William Creed and his four daughters-in-law (step-daughters), mentioning by name Johney (Joane?) and Mary Creede (id., p. 114). The five children of Raphael and Grace Creed were; 1) Elizabeth Creed, who married Francis Hogwood and had issue, Richard, William, George and Frances Hogwood; 2) Maudlin Creed who married first, Marmaduke Beckwith (d. 1670), second, Edward Oliver (1649-1676), and third 1676, John Warren, and had at least two Beckwith daugherts, Elizabeth and Grace; 3) Johney (Joane?) Creed married probably Noah Barefoot; 4) Mary Creed married first 1678, John Flood; second 1679, David Andrews Jr.; and 5) William Creed, d.s.p. 1688, leaving his property to David Andrews and Noah Barefoot.
It appears highly probable that the Raphael Creed (named as a son in the will of Edward Creed, of Shirehampton, Gloucester, and as a grandson in the will of Rapael Creed, of the parish of Westbury, upon Trim, Gloucester) is identical with Ralph or Raphael Creed of Surry County. Joan Creed, mentioned in the wills as wife of Peter Redman, may offer the clue to the English origin of another early Virginia settler, namely John Redman of Westmoreland County (1623-73), whose first son was named Peter.
