He was born at Voss, Norway, Jan 20, 1827 and came to America in 1839, settling in Chicago when it was a small town. He remained there until 1845, when he went to McHenry County, Ill, where he worked on an abolition newspaper for two years. In 1847 he went to Muskego, Wis., and worked as compositor on Nordlyset, the first Norwegian newspaper in the northwest. In 1848 he went to Madison, Wis., where he clerked in a general merchandise store, and in 1850 came to Winneshiek county. He entered land in Springfield township, leading the first band of settlers in that township, but engaged as clerk in a store at Frankville for two years, afterwards goint to Ossian and conducting a general store for four years. In 1860 he moved onto his farm, and that fall was elected sheriff of this county. He moved to Decorah in 1861, being re-elected sheriff in 1862, and returning to the farm in 1864, after the expiration of his term of office. Since that time he has alternately lived upon the farm and in Decorah. He was married three times, to Miss Anna Halvorson Nov 5, 1851, died April 15, 1852; to Miss Laura Hanson July 15, 1856, who died May 16, 1876 and to Mrs, Mary Thompson, nee Opdahl, Oct. 8, 1877, who still survives."
