Around 1885 Cornelis van Veen moved to Amsterdam as a carpenter. There he worked his way up to become a very skilled construction supervisor whose expertise the architect H.P. Berlage made use of in the construction of the Stock Exchange. Also the architect J.F. Staal regularly worked with him, for example on the construction of the Central Aalsmeerse Veiling.
The latter wrote to the family, when Cornelis van Veen had died as a result of a tram accident: "How vigourus he has stood by me for many years as a younger architect, helped me through countless difficulties in the execution of buildings. I think in thankfullness to him not only to his great knowledge, experience, and unlimited eagerness, but above all to his high integrity and honesty."
