- Parents: David and Elizabeth (Allen) Mathes, were natives of Warren County, Tenn. David died in Missouri and Elzabeth moved to Stone County and settled on the McCord farm for 16 years untill she died in 1867. The had these children: James, Polly, Rebecca, Nancy, Elizabeth, John, William, Wilson, Margaret, W.G. Mathes and Minerva.
The family was of Scotch-Irish origin, and on David's side decendants of a soldier of the Revolution and of the Black Hawk War, from which he earned a land warrant.
When W. G. Mathes grew up the nearest school was four or five miles distant, and he received but a limited education, and devoted most of his attention to tilling the soil, for he decided to make that his life's calling. In 1859 he was married to Dorcas Anderson, a daughter of Samuel Anderson and Mary (McKinsie), a native of White County, Tenn.
