  • Notes
    • Charles was born on or about 28 September 1755 at St. Andrews Parish, Holborn Garden, England, accordin to his fathers will. He was baptized as "CHARLES HOLMES, son of CHARLES and MARY LANCASTER of Gray's Inn Lane." It was recorded as thus, because Charles was the illegitimate son of Mary and in this time period, Mary would have gone to prison or the goal as they called it for having a illegitimate child.

In the will, Charles H. was to receive from his father's estate all property, bank annuities, gold plate, furnishings, etc. and all that remained belonging to his father, to be transferred to his son Charles H. when he ATTAINED THE AGE OF 21 YEARS > [in 1776] and the interest thereof to be paid to him by the Executors, but if he should die before reaching 21 years and without issue, the estate would revert back to his former wife Susanna. However, for some reason, young Charles left England in 1774.

Charles Holmes Stuteville was 18 years of age when his father died and at age 19, he departed from Greenwich, the Port of London between 28th of August to the 4th of September 1774 on the Ship Rebecca. The passenger list recorded his occupation as a husbandman, meaning the head of a family or a farmer and was an indented servant to pay for his passage. He undoubtedly worked on a farm for the man who paid his passage until he was age 21 in September of 1776. The master would then release him from bondage and give him a new suit of clothing, a little money and some corn to start a new life.

The Revolutionary War was in full progress by this time and Charles undoubtedly served. However, I have not found a war record. The handwriting was illegiable and the name of "Stuteville" was always misspelled in early records. I have always assumed he arrived in America without money. However, he did carry with him, his father's sheep-skin will that had been proved in the Court of Canterbury in London and could be used in America as security.

Charles Holmes Stuteville married first about 1780 in Maryland to AMANDA SOPHIA BROWN, born in England about 1760. She was the mother of at least seven sons and two daughters who survived to adulthood. The youngest was Thomas BROWN Stuteville, born 1801. Apparently Amanda died in early 1809 as Charles married second by 19 August 1809 to MARGARET "Peggy" O'CONNER in Grayson County, Kentucky. She was named on a Hardin County, Kentucky deed on that day.

In 1787, Charles was in Fayette County, Virginia in that part that later became the Commonwealth of Kentucky. He lived and raised his family in Hardin County that became Grayson County, Kentucky. Most all the Stutevilles moved to Spencer County, Indiana in 1820 and there the elder patriarch, CHARLES HOLMES STUTEVILLE died soon after. He was age 65 when he made this move. Family records show he was first buried in the Olde Rockport Pioneer Cemetery and later this cemetery was abandoned and most graves were moved to the new cemetery called Sunset Hill Cemetery.

Very little is known about Charles since his arrival in America in 1774, until he appeared in Kentucky County, Virginia in 1787, now Scott County, Virginia at Estillville. This area became the state of Kentucky in 1791. On September 10, 1788, Charles "Stitwell" served seven days of active militia on the frontier under Capt. Charles Hazelrell. The same year, the tax records show he owned two Black Slaves; owned four Black Slaves in 1789 and by 1792 Fayette County, Kentucky, Charles purchased 90 acres on Barren Creek.

In 1799, Charles was on the Hardin County, Kentucky tax records with one son, unnamed. [As sons became age 16, they were placed on the tax rolls as the father had to then pay a tax on him. It was fairly accurate].

Two years later, he owned 250 acres on Rock Creek where the family remained until 1810, when Grayson County was formed from Hardin County. We have no way of finding some of the early records, as the Grayson County Kentucky Courthouse burned in 1864. All of their records were lost.

Attached to the Will is a certified paper from S.H. Geisal, Clerk of Bates County, Missouri stating that "THE ORIGINAL WILL of [LT] CHARLES STUTEVILLE WAS PRODUCED IN MY OFFICE on 22 March 1871."

Thomas, the youngest son of Charles H. Stuteville always said: "He was the son of an only son who came from England and that his father, Charles Holmes Stuteville told him that the trip over almost cost him his life and he wasn't going back for any money."

The children of Charles Holmes Stuteville were taken from the tax lists, census records, marriage and other records of Kentucky and Spencer County, Indiana.
