Notes - Herbert Bass was born in the old town of Shasta in September 1853. He was engaged in the hardware business in Millville in May 1878 when he and Miss Ida F. Powers, were married at a double wedding, the other couple being C. C. Bidwell, now reciding in Hat Creek Valley, and Miss Amanda Welch.
In the spring of 1880 Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Bass took up their residence in Montgomery Creek, and there they made their home ver since. Mr. Bass prospered in the merchantile business, and established a home that was noted as a hospitable stopping place for alle travelers. He built a telephone system that covers the eastern part of the county and has 300 miles of Wire.
