- Parents were Albert Franklin Deale (1881– 1913) and Lula Brown (1886– 1937). Lula remarried James T. Holmes, and Velma and her sister Celia took his last name too.
Velma was married three times, to Oval Gray (1905-1928), Archie Lee Hammock (1909-1987) and Conrad Jensen.
Her children were:

Marcia Shirley Hammock / Jensen (1934– 2016)
When Shirley was seven weeks old in 1935, their home burned, and Velma managed to rescue her four young children and her mother from the fire.
Orpha and Marcia were at the Edgewater Home for Girls in the 1940 census. Lee (Archie) and Billy were at the Turner Home For Boys. Velmas second husband Archie was remarried in San Diego by then, and Velma was a single waitress in Norfolk City. Conrad adopted.
