"only six bricks and a few laths separated the group og dangerous young despeardoes from freedom, when they were discovered by jail attendants. A long blanket was in readiness to be used to slide down to the street and socks stuffed with tinfoil had been prepared as weapons in event of detection", the Stockton Idependent reported on May 12, 1936. He was moved to California State prison at San Quentin and served untill 1939.

    Mrs. J.H. Wade received word Wednesday that her nephew, John M. Bass, with a combat Engineering Division in Belgium, had been killed in action Jan. 28. Mrs. Wade's brother, T.E. Bass of Tulare, Calif., had received a letter from the chaplain of John's division that he had been killed and that burial was made in the American cemetery in Belgium.
